A custom watch isn't pulled off a production line — it's put together piece by piece, usually to order. If you've ever wondered what actually goes into one, here's how a custom automatic watch comes together, step by step.
1. The movement goes first
Everything is built around the movement — the engine of the watch. For an automatic build that's typically the Seiko NH35, a self-winding mechanical movement that runs off the motion of your wrist with no battery. For a chronograph build it's usually the VK63 Meca-Quartz, which adds a working stopwatch. (We break down the difference in NH35 vs VK63.)
2. The dial and hands
The dial is the face of the watch and does most of the talking — colour, texture, numerals or markers. The hands are fitted to match. This is where two watches with identical internals can end up looking completely different.
3. The case and crystal
The movement and dial are seated into a stainless steel case, capped with a sapphire crystal — the same scratch-resistant material used on high-end watches. Sapphire shrugs off the daily knocks that would leave marks on cheaper mineral glass.
4. The strap or bracelet
Steel bracelet, two-tone, or a rubber strap — the finish changes the whole character of the watch, from dressy to sporty. It's the last big styling choice before assembly.
5. Hand assembly and timing
The parts are assembled by hand, the movement is checked, and the watch is left to run so its timekeeping can be confirmed. A mechanical automatic is a tiny machine — it gets treated like one.
6. Inspection and packaging
Before anything ships, each watch is inspected — dial alignment, hand clearance, crown action, crystal. Then it's boxed with its warranty card, ready to go.
Why “built to order” matters
Because every COSO watch is assembled by hand and built to order, nothing sits in a warehouse for months. You're getting a watch made after you place the order, checked by a person, and backed by free tracked worldwide shipping, a 1-year warranty and 30-day returns.
